WJA NY Metro | In The Know, Tour of Sterling Hill Mine and Museum with Lunch

Did you know that New Jersey has one of the world’s richest zinc ore deposits? Because of the state’s unique geology, the state has more than 354 minerals, including 88 which fluoresce. For this year's In The Know, we are excited to invite you on a walking adventure into the fourth oldest mine in the country and the last working underground mine in New Jersey. As part of The Women’s Jewelry Association, it is important to consider responsible sourcing, and that includes the start of a gem and mineral’s journey, beginning at the mine. With an incredible mine and museum in our own backyard, nearby in Odgensburg, NJ, we want to give every local member an opportunity to learn about responsible mining operations. (One day bus trip - pick-up and drop location in midtown Manhattan, details below)

Join us and see the one and only fluorescent rainbow tunnel, Museum of Fluorescence, and one of the most incredible collections of fluorescent minerals on earth. The tour includes a tour of the mine, an outdoor display of mining machinery, exhibit halls, and an opportunity to collect your own mineral specimens in the mine run dump, featuring both an international (minerals from around the world) and a local pile (ore derived from the Sterling Hill Mine itself).

What you will see and learn during this valuable In The Know” experience:
1. Learn about the rich mining history of the Sterling Hill mine, and how it shaped the state and country's future.
2. Learn about mineral mining, mining towns, and the mineral miner.
3. Sterling Hill is one of the world's premiere mineral localities. Learn about the minerals found at this mine, and the reasons why some minerals display fluorescence.
4. Zinc has long been in demand as a raw material, useful to society. Learn more about the ways we use zinc in our daily lives
5. Review modern mining methods that have minimized the environmental effects of mining.
6. Join the Underground Mine Tour and discover "glow-in-the-dark" fluorescent minerals.
7. Dig for rocks at the Mine Run Dump.
8. See unique fossils and minerals at the Discovery Center.

About The Sterling Hill Mine and Museum

Located in the Franklin-Sterling Hill Mining District, known for its rich zinc ore and florescent mineral deposits, the museum explores the story of the area's mining history and earth science research. The museum is situated on the grounds of the Sterling Mine, a former New Jersey Zinc Company mine, which successfully operated as New Jerseys last underground mine until it ceased operating in 1986. The Sterling Hill Mining Museum is the only location in the state where an underground mine and its attendant facilities have been preserved almost intact and are open to the public.

Since its opening, the Museum has added new exhibits annually to fulfill its mission to tell the story of Sterling Hill and to inspire learning about earth sciences, engineering, history and the responsible use of the Earths non-renewable resources.”
