In a departure from past mentoring events, mentees now must ARRIVE AT GIA AT 5:30 PM TO SIGN UP FOR MENTORING SESSIONS IN PERSON, NOT ONLINE.
You'll still be able to meet with two professionals for 20-minute sessions during the evening, and network in between with other professionals. You just must arrive at 5:30 pm to choose your mentors in person, not online.
Additionally, Conversation Pits will take place for all attendees between mentor meetups. These will be led by Jennifer Heebner, president of WJA NY Metro Chapter, industry journalist, and executive director of the Cultured Pearl Association of America; Marco Giovanelli, from Giovanelli Consulting specializing in business development of luxury brands; Jackie LeBental from BLC Luxury Consulting Agency and Maria Tsangaropoulos from GIA professor of jewelry manufacturing.
MEET THE MENTORS
Eve Streicker, the founder of Original Eve Designs, specializes in creating custom jewelry and unique items inspired by her travels around the world. With work experience at Tiffany & Co. in education and luxury sales training, in museum and auction house settings, as well as managing jewelry production for small designers and purchasing estate jewelry from the public, Eve has a wide array of experiences that contribute to her love for jewelry, history, gemstones, and craftsmanship.
Eve is a certified Graduate Gemologist and Graduate Pearl expert by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). She received her M.F.A. in Metal/Jewelry/CAD-CAM from Tyler School of Art at Temple University and her B.A. in Art History and Studio Art Practice from Williams College. Eve is the president elect of the Women's Jewelry Association (WJA) New York Metro Chapter. She is a member of the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA), Jewelers of America (JA), and the GIA Alumni Association. Eve is also the proud recipient of the WJA Shining Star Award 2017, WJA Member Grant 2015, and the Bertha Anolic Memorial Grant 2013.
My involvement within the jewelry industry spans 49 years. I was a partner in a third-generation manufacturing firm for over 30 years. When we closed shop, I sought a way to keep myself immersed within the jewrelry culture. I utilize my life experiences to understand my clients. My goal is to have you put as much energy into protecting your businesses as you do in building it. Whether analyzing a start-up business, a Family Succession Plan, an Exit Strategy or the Sale of a Business, I believe that I am an important guide in all stages of business planning. My paramount concern is working with business owners in all generations to help create and preserve their wealth. I know it takes vision, preparedness, skills, desire and dedication to tackle the challenges and sacrifices business owners contend with every day. I am a member of the 24 Karat Club of New York, the Jewelers’ Security Alliance, the Jeweler’s Vigilance Committee and the Women’s Jewelry Association. I am a GIA graduate, a former AGS supplier member, and a former board member of AGTA. I am currently a WJA mentor. My industry know-how makes me distinctly qualified to understand the nuances of combining business and family successfully.
GAIL BRETT LEVINE
Gail Brett Levine, independent personal property appraiser, has been in the jewelry trade for 40 years. Initially starting as President of an antique shop in Alexandria, VA, Presidential Antiques Co., Inc., she specialized in antique, period and estate jewelry. She received her GG in residence (NY) in 1980 and currently serves on the Executive Council of the GIA Alumni Association as well as an officer of the Manhattan Chapter of the GIA Alumni since 1982. She has been a Board member and Treasurer of the American Society of Jewelry Historians, Board Advisor of the Gem-A USA, Past President of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Appraisers, 1996 - 1998, and served on its Board for five years.
Ms. Levine is President of Timeless, Inc. (1982 to present) specializing in insurance, estate, claims and donation appraisals of antique, estate and contemporary jewelry, precious metals and loose diamonds and colored stones and gem consulting. In 1994, she started her subscription based publication Auction Market Resource for Gems and Jewelry which is an indepth report by qualified appraiser/gemologists of sales results of jewelry at auction which previews gem material. In 2008, Ms. Levine revised, updated and expanded Gem & Jewelry Appraising: Techniques of Professional Practice written by Anna Miller, GG. On March 2004, Ms. Levine accepted the position of Executive Director of The National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NAJA) - the largest membership association specializing exclusively in gem and jewelry appraising and related appraisal issues.
Pam Levine is the founder and president of Levine Luxury Branding, a boutique agency providing strategic branding and creative marketing solutions to the jewelry industry. LLB provides clients with a clear, integrated brand experience and a powerful presence in the marketplace. Pam began her career as a jeweler at Cartier and brings the same focus on detail to the brands she works with. Pam shares her expertise on retail experience, visual merchandising & luxury branding in articles for consumer and trade publications and as a speaker at luxury industry events including Luxury Marketing Council, Couture, JCK, JA trade shows, IRDC- International Retail Design Conference, and Globalshop. Clients include Cartier, Disney, GIA, World Gold Council, Maria Canale, Gurhan, Lika Behar, De Beers and Tourneau.
Karen S. Sampieri, a New York native, began her career at the Gemological Institute of America as a resident student. Throughout her career, Karen has procured some of the world’s most sought-after colored gemstones and is regarded as a top gemstone expert. She has worked for some of the finest luxury brands and auction houses including Christie’s, Bonhams, Fred Leighton, Tiffany’s and Harry Winston. Karen has recently brought her years of experience to the young, but no longer a start up company, The RealReal, as a Senior Valuation Manager. She is excited to be part of such an forward moving company. Karen is an active board member of the Women’s Jewelry Association, Metro Chapter. She has held may board positions including Co-President and currently she serves as an Adviser. Karen is a GIA Alumni member and sits on the school’s Program Advisory Committee. She also is a member of the American Society of Jewelry Historians and the New York Jewelers Club.
Edward Petersen is a NY resident that graduated from GIA GG from the class of 1985. He had briefly worked as a ruby and sapphire wholesaler before teaching the GG program in NY for 2.5 years. He joined Kwiat in 1988 and is currently the VP in charge of Product Development and Production for Kwiat and Fred Leighton. In his spare time he loves mineral collecting, freshwater fishing, and playing keyboards in a rock band.
In 1995 I was in a boring job and was desperate for a creative challenge where I could use my hands. I took myself to the local art school but the pottery class I was interested in was closed. Hmm. The only thing left was a metalsmithing class. So I hammered my heart out and have never looked back. I still have what looks like a tin can that I forged from copper, sitting on my jewelry bench. It reminds me how close I came to missing out on my true calling as a jeweler.
In my 20+ years in the industry I have worked for both large and small manufacturers where I traveled the world helping to build factories, model shops and work with international design teams. For the past 15 years I have had my own award-winning business, Metalicious.com, and opened a fine jewelry studio in the Flatiron district. I’m so thankful every day to be able to do what I love to support my family. Jewelry is my true passion, I love creating things that bring joy to people, that represent milestones, that make people feel loved.
Our environment is very important to me so I use recycled metals and ethically sourced gemstones in all of my work. I also use green practices in running my business as much as possible. I’d like to leave behind as small a footprint as I can and hope to be a positive example for my kids for a better future.
Ben Janowski, owner of Janos Consultants, comes from a New York diamond family that reaches back nearly 100 years to Portugal and Belgium. He has been in the diamond and jewelry industry for his entire career, first in top management positions for major American companies and then, for the last 22 years, as a consultant specializing in strategic planning for the American market. In that capacity he has consulted for dozens of large and small companies. He has often appeared as a guest speaker and panelist at industry events and has written many articles for a number of trade publications, including a monthly opinion column for JCK Magazine for five years. Sarah Russell is a manager at NEI Group, the Secretary of the American Gem Society Young Titleholders, and the VP of Membership for the Women's Jewelry Association NY Metro Chapter. At NEI, Sarah is responsible for company-wide technology strategies including overseeing web development. She also manages the hiring of personnel and company training. As a senior manager, Sarah is involved in other key strategic decisions including merchandising and financial planning. Before NEI Group Sarah worked at Google Inc. for seven years. At Google she managed a team of Technical Advertising Consultants working with top tier advertisers to plan and execute digital ad campaigns. Sarah has her Graduate Diamond and Accredited Jewelry Professional degrees from GIA and has a Registered Supplier title with the American Gem Society. Sarah earned an MBA from NYU Stern with an entrepreneurship focus as well as a Bachelors degree from Boston University with a major in Finance.
Laura Lyden is owner of Elbee Strategic. Previously she was CEO/CMO of ViewPoint in New York City, VP Sales John Hardy Collection, and held several positions within Neiman Marcus on both merchant and store sides. Her range of experience includes buying for multi door operations, retail sales management, store and assortment planning, new store openings, wholesale strategic sales management, brand development, product development and product planning. She has worked with all sizes of companies from start-up designers to established brands. An industry seminar on how to develop a concise pitch and presentation for designers several years ago led to an annual speaking engagement at FIT in NY for seniors in the Jewelry Program on how to prep for launching a collection.
